MANILA, Philippines – In an all-out war that is a sure contender for the Fight of the Year, Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios stopped Mike Alvarado in the seventh round of their junior welterweight clash Saturday at the Home Depot Center in California (Sunday morning in Manila).
Rios and Alvarado exchanged hard punches and went toe-to-toe for the first six rounds, with neither man seemingly getting the upper hand.
In the third round, Alvarado became more careful as he started to set up Rios with his jab, but “Bam Bam” kept moving forward in a determined effort to turn the bout into a brawl. Late in the fourth round, Alvarado loaded a series of hard shots that snapped Rios’ head back.
Though Alvarado continued to box and jab in the fifth and sixth rounds, Rios was able to gain control late by standing toe-to-toe with Alvarado and getting the better of their exchanges.
Rios ended Alvarado’s night in the seventh round when he landed a right hand that stunned the latter. With Alvarado pinned to the ropes, Rios began to unload his punches, leading referee Pat Russell to stop the fight.
It was Alvarado’s first loss of his career, giving him a 33-1 record. Meanwhile, Rios remained undefeated with a 31-0-1 record.
