TV5 overtakes GMA-7 in TV Ratings for key provincial cities

MANILA - TV5 on Wednesday said it is eating into GMA Network's market share, after the Kapatid network grabbed the lead in all-day viewer ratings from rival Kapuso in key cities around the Philippines.

In a statement, TV5 cited Nielsen Metro City TV Audience Measurement (MCTAM) data from October 1-31 showing that the network overtook GMA7 in all-day viewer ratings in six cities, namely Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos and Bacolod. Both TV5 and GMA7 subscribe to Nielsen Media Research.

TV5 noted that its gains came less than 3 years after it set up its provincial network, with plans of expanding to the cities of Naga, Roxas and Batangas in the coming months.

TV5 president Ray C. Espinosa said this latest feat stemmed from the "outstanding work" of the company's personnel, especially in its provincial stations.

“Beyond the resources we have committed to expand the network, the management takes pride in our people who never get tired and work long hours to reach our goals,” he said.

In Metro Cebu, which at 1.5 million viewers comprise the biggest urban center in the Visayas, TV5 took a 23 percent audience share, as against GMA7's 18 percent.

In Metro Bacolod, home to 500,000 viewers, TV5 cornered 25 percent of the audience as against GMA7’s 18 percent.

In Metro Iloilo, TV5 enjoyed an 18 percent share of the audience, as against GMA7's 17 percent. The Kapatid network's audience share represented a 17-point gain from the one percent share it had last June.

In Metro Davao, home to 800,000 viewers, TV5 recorded a five-point increase from 15 percent in January to 20 percent last month. In contrast, GMA7 suffered a decline in viewership from 25 percent to 18 percent over the same period.

In Metro Cagayan de Oro, which has close to 600,000 viewers, TV5 enjoys an audience share of 27 percent, a 12-point lead over GMA7, which suffered a decline in its share to 15 percent from the earlier 33 percent.

In Metro General Santos City, TV5 had a 13-point lead with its 34 percent audience share, catapulting it to the top spot with rival ABS-CBN, ahead of GMA7's 21 percent.

In Metro Dagupan, TV5's all-day viewership gained 6 percentage points to 21 percent at the expense of GMA7, which shaved off 7 percentage points to 28 percent.
